Acoustic Characteristics of Japanese Vowels
نویسندگان
چکیده
The purpose of this study was to build a large database on Japanese vowels and to clarify their acoustic characteristics. Recordings were made of 256 males and 252 females aged from 6 to 76 years old, for both Kanto (Tokyo) and Kansai (Osaka) dialects, producing the vowels /i, e, a, o, u/ in isolation, in /h-Vda/ syllables and in /b-V-ta/ syllables within and without a carrier sentence. The five vowels uttered with different notes were also recorded. A total of 154,570 vowel tokens were collected and phoneme labels were given to each of them. Analysis of the formant data showed that there was little difference between the two dialects. Formant frequencies were the highest for children's vowels and those of boys and girls were comparable in distribution. Formant frequencies of men were the lowest. The mean F0 of men dropped at the age of 12 to 13 due to the voice breaking. Formant frequencies shifted up when vowels were uttered at higher musical notes. The rate of the shift due to F0 change, however, was smaller than that seen among age groups. Dynamic features of formants varied with phonemic environment but were not affected by mora structure and talkers age.

Acoustic features of Japanese words spoken by Japanese natives and non-natives
To investigate acoustic feature differences between Japanese nativeand non-native speakers in spoken Japanese, 29 Japanese words were digitally recorded by 10 each of Japanese, French, Korean, Thai, Taiwanese, and Vietnamese speakers. The results revealed that acoustic features in each language have different tendencies in relative duration, intensity, and fundamental frequency. For example, co...
متن کاملAcoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels
This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...
متن کاملThe effect of consonantal context and acoustic characteristics on the discrimination between the English vowel /i/ and /e/ by Japanese learners
This paper investigated how Japanese learners of English discriminated the American English vowel /Ι/ from /Ε/ in /CVt/ monosyllables with 23 different initial consonants, and how the differing discrimination was related to the acoustic characteristics of the English vowels compared with those of Japanese vowels /i/ and /e/ in disyllables with a final syllable of /to/. The results showed that t...
متن کاملIntelligibility and acoustic correlates of Japanese accented English vowels
To produce near-native American English (AE) vowels, Japanese speakers must extend their five vowel system with at least six new vowels. Three experiments have been conducted to acquire both perceptual and acoustic measures about Japanese accented English (JE)vowels. Six non-back vowels of AE in several phonetic environments were recorded from four Japanese male talkers with moderate English sk...
متن کاملCorpus-based L2 phonological data and semi-automatic perceptual analysis: the case of nasal vowels produced by beginner Japanese learners of French
Processing large amounts of non-native (L2) phonological data for acquisition-related research remains a challenging task, especially when acoustic analyses are not straightforward as is the case with nasal vowels. Within the InterPhonologie du Français Contemporain project (IPFC), we have developed a perceptual coding procedure and a piece of dedicated software aimed at providing an intermedia...
